thirstythong’s posterous

Chim My  //  “But the most significant derivation from the meaning of as ‘water’ is the concept of people who have gathered near a body of water to grow rice for one another, and founding a stable community, sharing rain and drought, plenty and famine, peace and war: from ‘water,’ its basic meaning, has come to designate ‘the homeland, the country, the nation.’ It is in this ultimate acception that the monosyllable nước reverberates throught the deepest and farthest recesses of the Vietnamese collective unconscious and stirs there the most potent feelings. The nation’s fateful course, marked by ups and downs, is figuratively rendered as a ‘tide of water’ (vận nước) with its ebb and flow. The highest virtue demanded of a Vietnamese is that he or she ‘love the nước‘ (yêu nước).” –Huynh Sanh Thong (no relation)

Bucket in Disguise

One day I woke up to this bucket of water occupying my bathroom like an unsanctioned foreign battalion. Like the pacifist I am, I just let it occupy "my space" thinking: "the housekeeper keeps it here for some reason."

Oh yeah, and I'm lazy.

Low and behold, tonight, I've run out of water for showering, teeth brushing and the numero dos...here, at my side, stands my cherie amour, my angel in red, my always down Jackie Brown. I'll never doubt you again toots.

Something about the bucket, the fact that it was never used...it would somehow prove useful, I just didn't know in what way and when.

Red Water Buckets come in many different forms in our lives, no?

A book you have yet to open.

The phone number from a middle school friend you have stashed in your organizer.

The frequent flyer miles.

The words you have saved for a stranger.

Proof Fat Kids Exist in VN

I actually could have just posted a pic of myself...here is proof that the egg tart is in fact served at KFC in VN, see upper left hand corner.

Also notice my culinary expertise with the slopping of coleslaw on the New Orleans chicken burger.

Remember, one can choose to swap the seemingly mandatory Pepsi with a bottle of Aquafina if one so desires.

FYI, the Zinger is way better, but you know what's even better than this?

A better heart condition.

The Cost of Travelling actually not up in Smoke (necessarily)

These are EVA airlines current prices. I met a couple last night that flew for $700 roundtrip to HCMC from SFO. Recession means lower pricing across all sectors and markets, with the exception of alcohol, as people drink when they're up and when they're down.

Going to Amsterdam suddenly became reality. Wink.

Vietnam always on that come up whatitdoodoo

I can tell what websites are most popular simply based on what my co-workers are looking at during breaktime:

Music websites so they can stream
Video game websites, I've seen one gal play something akin to Dance Dance Revolution, only with your keyboard

In the past couple of months, I've seen more and more of my co-workers signing up with facebook (which naturally prompted me to take down my otherwise questionable images). Lately, they've gotten me into that effin Happy Farm game, where you plant crops, steal other friends crops, sell them to earn money so you can buy puppies and pickup trucks.

And again, Vietnam is on one of these top 10 lists in terms of most rapid growth and yes, this is the second time Vietnam has beaten Thailand (in addition to the best soccer match-up in recent Vietnam history). Huzzah!

Artifact

"You should see that line-up - dope!!! Artifact found at the Wing Luke Asian Museum, Seattle, WA. The only Asian Museum in the states!" - Bao Phi

Wow, a drawing I did (not the best I've done if I admit ever so humbly), as part of the concert series thrown by SASC (UC Berkeley's Southeast Asian Student Coalition) is in a museum.

Guess the only thing left to do now is run for office.
